In light of the Coronavirus and the impact it is having, not just on city resident’s lives, but also on the City’s revenues, Wednesday evening the Bridgeton City Council was faced with some very difficult decisions related to cost savings for this current fiscal budget (FY2020). The City Council approved a comprehensive plan developed by administration, that included;
• some temporary employee furloughs,
• eliminating any travel,
• suspending all construction projects and future capital equipment purchases,
• canceling this year’s Fourth of July [Independence Day] festivities,
• and beginning July 1, requiring residents to begin paying for trash, recycling and yard waste collection. This will cost each single-family residence within the City $14.70 per month and shall become effective on July 1, 2020. Though the City has been fortunate over the years to pay for this service out of the City’s general fund, this was one of the cost-saving measures that was required in order to offset the projected losses.
This will save the city the projected $2.2 million officials anticipate will be lost due to the coronavirus impact on the city’s revenues.
